June Update

The American Humanist Association has issued this statement in the wake of the terrible tragedy in Orlando this past weekend. You can also help support the survivors and families of the victims by donating to the fund created by Equality Florida.

Our June Monthly Gathering this Saturday June 18th features a panel of prominent atheist/LGBT activists who will be sharing their unique personal experiences as gay, bisexual, and transgender atheists. Also prior to the panel discussion will be a short presentation by Larry T. Decker, the Executive Director of Secular Coalition for America. Larry Decker is openly gay, and one of the most prominent openly-LGBT figures in the entire freethought movement, and we will be very fortunate to have him here in person.

Also, thanks to HOH member Jimmy McLaughlin for funding this quarter-page ad in OutSmart Magazine to promote our June Monthly Gathering! Look for the ad in the current issue, which you can pick up for free at many locations around town.

After the success of the HOH float and booth at last year’s Pride Houston Festival, we’re doing it again this year, and we will have several VIP’s from the Houston LGBT and/or Atheist community on our float, including legendary LGBT activist Ray Hill, Spin Doctors Bassist Mark White, Foundation Beyond Belief Executive Director Noelle George, and Spiritual Naturalist Society Executive Director (and former HOH President) DT Strain!

Also, EVERYONE in HOH is invited to walk in the parade as part of our float. There is no limit to the number of people who can walk, and this will be a great opportunity to show solidarity with the LGBT community during this difficult time by marching together as humanists in the Pride parade. For more details and to sign up for a spot in the float and/or at the HOH booth, see the meetup event HERE.

HOH Board Member Benita Malone is now a registered Humanist Celebrant and certified through the American Humanist Association to perform humanist ceremonies!

“Humanist Celebrants conduct Humanist, nonreligious, and interreligious weddings, same-sex weddings, memorials, baby namings, transgender namings, anniversaries, marriage dissolutions, and other life cycle ceremonies. Humanist Celebrants are legally recognized in all states and many countries, being accorded the same rights and privileges granted by law to priests, ministers, and rabbis of traditional theistic religions.”

Per Benita: “I have a master’s degree in psychology, and am on the board of the Humanists of Houston. I believe that we strengthen ourselves and give meaning to our lives when we take the time to celebrate our life cycle events with family and friends, which is why I chose to become a celebrant. I can help you celebrate joyous occasions and mark sad ones with an understanding that this life is the only one we have.”

If you are in need of a celebrant for an upcoming event, please contact Benita at secularcelebrations@outlook.com and for more info see website HERE.

The HOH Board would like all of our members and donors to have full confidence that HOH funds are handled responsibly and ethically. To that end, the HOH Board has implemented formal rules and procedures for how all HOH donations are to be handled and managed by the HOH leadership, and they have been posted to the HOH website HERE.

Does the company you work for have a charitable contribution matching program? If so, you might be able to have them match any donations you’ve made to HOH, in part or in full. While some company programs have restrictions on the types of organizations that can be matched, we know that at least some will match employee donations to HOH (AT&T has been confirmed to be one of them).
