October Updates

Updates regarding the latest developments in Humanists of Houston:
——————————

This weekend features two big HOH events at Trini Mendenhall with several special guest speakers!

On Friday October 14th coming all the way from Grand Rapids, Michigan will be Ed Brayton, the founder of FreethoughtBlogs and blogger at Dispatches From the Culture Wars with a presentation entitled “Why Atheism Is Not Enough”. Doors open at 6:30 and presentation kicks off at 7 PM.

The following day, our October Monthly Gathering features civil rights attorney Randall Kallinen and Iranian refugee Sanam Shah. Randall will be sharing his experience with the recent lawsuit involving crosses on police vehicles while also sharing his expertise regarding church/state violations and the Constitution, and Sanam will be sharing her story of fleeing persecution in Iran for writing atheist music, which resulted in her recently obtaining asylum in the United States. As usual, doors will open at 12:30 and the program kicks off at 1 PM.

The annual Winter Solstice Party is just a few months away, and this year’s will feature special guests Aron Ra and Lilandra! As usual we’ll be holding a fundraiser raffle of cool items, both humanist-related and non. If you have any items (or even services) you would like to donate for the raffle, please reply to this email or send us an email at humanistsofhouston@yahoo.com

Very sad to announce that Reverend Mark Edmiston-Lange, Minister at Emerson Unitarian, has passed away. Mark respected humanist ideals and the work we do at HOH, and generously provided the use of Emerson facilities for several HOH events. He will be missed.

HOH Officer elections are coming up in November, and remember that you must be a paid voting member of HOH ($20/year) in order to vote. In order to provide all members with the opportunity to vote, all elections are now handled through online voting. Becoming a voting member is easy and can be done online HERE.

——————————

HOH is now on Amazon Smile! The way it works is simple: use http://smile.amazon.com for all your Amazon purchases, and designate Humanists of Houston as your beneficiary. That’s it! At no extra cost, a percentage of all your Amazon purchases will then be donated directly to HOH.

——————————

HOH relies exclusively on the generosity of our members to fund all of our operations and activities. For ways to donate in person or online, see this pageon the HOH website. All donations to HOH are 100% tax deductible, and all HOH Patrons ($20 or more per month) will be recognized (if you so choose) as Sponsors on the HOH Meetup front page!

——————————

The HOH Board would like all of our members and donors to have full confidence that HOH funds are handled responsibly and ethically. To that end, the HOH Board has implemented formal rules and procedures for how all HOH funds are to be handled and managed by the HOH leadership, and they have been posted to the HOH website HERE.

We invite all HOH members to join the official HOH Facebook Group, and to “Like” HOH at the HOH Facebook Page.

Thanks to everyone for being a part of HOH!
